The government of Berlin is seeking to respond to the demands of a growing city by expanding its tram system, which functions as a means of transportation that is both environmentally and economically friendly.

Early and continuous information and participation of citizens in the planning and implementation of new tramway construction projects is indispensable today and to the benefit of planning and the population. Through opportunities for participation, suggestions from citizens can be incorporated into the planning. Through participation, planning receives local knowledge or learns about possible concerns or even conflicts in good time. Both can still be integrated into the planning at an early stage.

Under the leadership of the Planergemeinschaft für Stadt und Raum eG, the nexus Institute is conducting participation events with stakeholders and citizens on various tram routes at different stages of planning from 2018 to 2022. In the first project phase, events were held on six tram routes. In the second project phase, further participation events are currently being held on five tram routes. The participation of citizens is followed by online participation via mein.Berlin.de.
