With the project “Citizens’ Buses Schleswig-Holstein”, the nexus Institute provides advice and information in 2016 in the north about voluntary driving services that are organised locally by citizens themselves. Especially in rural regions, the citizens’ bus can complement existing public transport. In smaller villages, there are older people who are no longer as mobile. On the other hand, there is an active community and a high willingness to get involved. A citizens’ bus links voluntary commitment with the issue of mobility. A citizens’ bus is always developed precisely for local needs. nexus has been supporting numerous citizens’ bus projects in other federal states for many years. The successful consulting approach with workshops, active citizen participation and a solution that brings a sustainable improvement for the local people is now also being implemented in Schleswig-Holstein. The first step is to inform the offices and districts about the existing possibilities. This is followed by local events to develop a joint citizens’ bus project. The aim of the project is to increase the number of citizens’ buses in operation.
