Technologies from space travel have had a decisive impact on people’s lives in recent decades. The availability of satellite navigation systems, advances in telecommunications and more accurate weather forecasts are just a few examples of how space has changed everyday life. In planning its future projects, the European Space Agency (ESA) wants to involve the citizens of its member states. On September 10, 2016, a Citizens’ Debate on Space for Europe was held in all 22 member states. In each case, 100 citizens discussed European spaceflight, contributed their opinions and developed proposals for ESA’s future priorities. nexus organized the Citizens’ Debate in Germany on September 10, 2016. It took place on the premises of the European Space Operations Center in Darmstadt. Citizens from all over Germany could register on a website to participate if they wanted to have a say in the future direction of European activities in space.
