The Wuppertal suspension railway is well known far beyond the city limits. Now a new project is being considered: a cable car that connects the main station with the Wuppertal-Cronenberg/Küllenhahn school centre and also stops at the Grifflenberg university campus. It can overcome Wuppertal’s challenging topography comparatively easily and connect the centre, which lies in the valley, with the higher-lying districts.

The project is not uncontroversial, as the cable car runs almost completely over inhabited areas. For this reason, the city of Wuppertal has decided to involve the residents in the questions of whether the planning of a cable car should be continued. The focus is on the following points in particular:

  • Overview of the current planning;
  • Urban integration of the cable car into the existing buildings;
  • Integration of the cable car into the existing public transport system;
  • Environmental friendliness and emissions of cable cars;
  • Impacts for local residents (shadows cast, privacy preserved, loss of property value);
  • Investments and operating costs.

The nexus Institute team will be active on site with the tried and tested participation procedures of planning cells and citizens’ expert reports. The citizens’ report summarises the recommendations of a total of around 50 randomly selected Wuppertal citizens. The report will be handed over to the city on 4 November 2016. The cable car is one of 13 projects in the “Wuppertal 2025” strategy. The aim is to ensure that the city remains attractive in the future and to further improve the quality of life for its residents.
