The first Citizens’ Assembly took place in Leipzig on 13 and 14 September. 160 randomly selected citizens from all over Germany discuss for a total of four days whether and how the parliamentary-representative democracy should be supplemented. They receive the necessary information from experts and then develop their recommendations at 23 moderated tables. In particular, the question is whether more elements of direct democracy and citizen participation should be introduced at the federal level. The Citizens’ Assembly on Democratic Reform in Germany was initiated by Mehr Demokratie e.V. and the Schöpflin Foundation, is organised by the nexus Institute and carried out jointly with its partner IFOK.
