Since 2007, the state of Berlin has involved citizens in an open process of participatory urban development in shaping today’s Tempelhofer Freiheit into a central Berlin place of the future. This participatory process is to be continued. The project consists of three phases:

  • The first phase involved holding three citizens’ discussions in the summer of 2012 in the districts adjacent to Tempelhofer Freiheit on the development of the district-related peripheral areas of the park landscape.
  • The second phase of the project focused on the elaboration of a more far-reaching participation strategy for the entire Tempelhofer Freiheit for the years 2013 to 2017. At the centre of the participatory approach are the three pillars of information, dialogue and participation.
  • The third phase includes the implementation of a participatory youth workshop and the preparation of a user advisory board for the design of the park landscape.

In the present project, the planning-oriented competences of the planning community are combined with the experience of the nexus Institute in the conception, implementation and evaluation of citizen participation events.
