Infrastructur and Society

Infrastructure and Society - in this area nexus edited projects in the fields of demography, mobility and regional development. How will people stay mobile in the future? Are there any useful tools for elderly people? Planning and development of sparsely populated areas is important as well. How can regions be stabilized from which young people migrate? nexus advises municipalities, counties, states and the federal government in the political management of demographic change.

Ongoing Projects

Making transport and logistics in the city of the future green and sustainable – German companies possess excellent expertise in this matter. But how can German green and sustainable products be made adaptable to the needs and requirements of these dynamic metropolitan areas? With the 'GLI-X: Green Logistic Indicators for Exports' project developed nexus with the GESI – the German Society for System Innovation mbH - a Smart Logistics Indicator System that supports companies in exporting their green and sustainable environmental infrastructure.

The research project Sustainable Urban Logistics will at first analyse and define what implications the three dimensions of sustainability have for urban logistics and vice versa. Additionally, the project will identify essential starting points to improve resource efficiency and urban sustainability. Photo: Bumann,

Bild: fotolia/9comeback

Information and communications technologies are playing an increasingly important role. Urbanisation continues to increase. What effect do both trends have when it comes to managing a modern city? Parallel to these trends, the understanding and expectations of local administration changes for citizens. What is required of the administration, how are political decisions made about which services are offered and what infrastructure is available in the city of the future? Many decision-makers are still unsure about how to implement new approaches. Grafic (c) by Alfstore

Through the research project LowExTra a novel, intelligent and democratic multi-wire system is to be developed. The goal is a network that responds, unlike today's supply and return pipe networks, flexibly to the extraction and supply of different temperature levels. The overall objective of the project is to explore the feasibility of democratic multi-wire networks from different perspectives. It is about the technical, economic, political and participatory elements. The indirect model for the project is based on plans for smart grids. Graphic source Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Brandt.

The administrative district of North-Saxony is a rural district with almost 200,000 people living in 30 municipalities. In the county town Arzberg are plans to introduce a citizens’ bus. Arzberg is located closed to Torgau and 70 Kilometer east of Leipzig. One aim is to supplement the existing public transport. The municipality of Arzberg consists in 18 districts on about 60 square kilometers with nearly 2,000 inhabitants. A citizens’ bus could improve the mobility between the small districts of Arzberg and facilitate routes in the triangle Arzberg, Torgau and Beilrode. The aim is to bring the citizens’ bus into the first half of 2017 on the road. Example-illustration (c) by Dr. Holger Jansen/nexus

Space technology has dominated people’s lives in recent decades. The availability of systems for satellite navigation, advances in telecommunications and more accurate weather forecasts are just a few examples of how space has changed daily life. The European Space Agency (ESA) wants to involve the citizens of its member states in the planning of future projects. nexus-staff Christian Kusch an Dr. Holger Jansen organized the German discussion at September 10th 2016, located at ESOC, Darmstadt, Hesse

nexus and the Herbert Quandt Foundation will work close together on the citizens' bus project at Homberg (Efze) in northern Hesse. A citizen bus always requires advice and information on legal, geographic, financial and social conditions. In addition, a citizens’ bus is planned locally and accurately developed according to existing local demand. Furthermore, the citizens’ bus should complement but not replace existing public transport. The aim of the joint work of the project partners is to ensure that a citizens’ bus can go into operation in Homberg (Efze) in the year 2016. Photo (c) by Dr. Holger Jansen/nexus

The flash-poll tool uses spatially relevant, contextual information and spatial information to address specific user groups of urban spaces. The mobile polling via smartphones makes it possible to place the poll within concise spatial and factual contexts. As this is a tool for public clients, data protection and personal rights play a central role. Photo: scanrail/fotolia

nexus designed and moderated an idea workshop for the Berlin Regional office of the district Tempelhof-Schöneberg. The aim was to involve citizens in the district of Tempelhof in the development of the District Region Profile. The districts of Berlin are encouraged to create a District Region Profile for each of the 138 district regions by means of a unifying structure, so as to allow comparability. The method was closed to the planning cells. Photo (c) nexus archive

How do sparsely populated regions of Europe adapt their technical and social infrastructure to the changing demographics? This question is central to the preliminary study which the nexus Institute is compiling as part of the

Preliminary study:
Regional public services – international experiences

The subject of the study was the development of recommendations for action to promote ethnic entrepreneurship in Berlin. These focus primarily on identifying and using specific opportunities and strengths of founders and entrepreneurs with a migration background. The literature describes this approach as 'Opportunity Recognition' (OR). Photograph (c) by Farina3000/

The rapid development of the national economies of Asia, especially of China, India and Russia, has dramatically raised the trade volume between Europe and Asia. However, railways offer a realistic alternative to sea shipping, the importance of which is increasing.

The nexus Institute, on behalf of Grün Berlin GmbH who supervise the park, have conducted a visitor-monitoring programme in order to learn more about the use of Tempelhof field. Visitor Monitoring 2014 is comprised of four components: A quantitative count of visitors, a qualitative surveying of visitors using a standardised questionnaire, designing and conducting focus group discussions and the analysis of the reports of the parking attendant. The analysis and findings from these different components are then combined to form a comprehensive documentation of results.

Since 2007, the State of Berlin has involved citizens in an open process on the creation of the 'Tempelhof field' - the site of the former airport. On the west side of the large open space a new residential area is currently being planned. In addition to the public participation prescribed by the Building Code a special participatory element will be used complementarily in planning: the development of a Citizens' Jury. As part of the participation strategy for the development of Tempelhof field a parkland user advisory council was founded in August 2013. The committee consists of 30 members. The members are from diverse groups who currently use or potentially will be making use of the parkland. This includes young people, senior citizens, migrants, people with disabilities, sports clubs, pioneering projects, neighborhood and citizen initiatives as well as conservationists.
