Awareness raising dimension: communication and participation strategies and analysis of lifestyles and consumption patterns The project was a German-Iranian research and collaborative project led by the Technical University of Berlin. The aim was to develop construction and planning methods as well as technologies for sustainable and energy-efficient new housing developments. The results of the project were technologies, methods and built pilot projects for energy-efficient construction in the following areas:

  • Urban development and design
  • Urban infrastructure systems
  • Building

The results were implemented in several pilot projects in the New Town Hashtgerd. The central pilot project covered a 35 ha area in Hashtgerd. This was to become a unique demonstration area for real innovations in Iran. The main task of the nexus Institute at the time was to create and raise awareness among the population for climate protection and for the importance of energy-efficient and low-emission lifestyles. The first steps included researching currently prevailing consumption patterns in Iran and analysing communication, cooperation and participation forms in Iran in more detail. In a second project phase, measures to raise awareness were to be implemented and underpinned with concrete cooperation and participation processes. For sustainable and energy-efficient urban development with Iranian actors, the special focus was on youth and young adults. The strategies developed were later to be transferred to other Iranian “New Towns”. The project is funded by the German side within the framework of research for the sustainable development of the megacities of tomorrow.
