Production of a memorandum for a participatory, sustainable and fair ecological transformation in Africa

Africa is one of the continents most affected by the impacts of climate change. Morocco and other African countries are facing this challenge and have developed national adaptation strategies. So far, however, civil society has hardly been involved in this transformation, although its participation could sustainably strengthen the process. Against this background, the Heinrich Böll Foundation Morocco launched a four-year transformAfrica programme in 2017 to support civil society initiatives and networks in Morocco and Africa. Within the framework of the programme, working groups with participants from Morocco, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia carried out various projects, including on the topics of energy, agriculture and waste management, which support a socio-ecological transformation in Africa from a civil society, scientific, journalistic and artistic perspective. In 2017 and 2018, the nexus Institute supported the Heinrich Böll Foundation in implementing the programme, among other things by accompanying working groups and facilitating conferences and workshops. To conclude the programme, nexus was commissioned to write a memorandum for a participatory, sustainable and fair ecological transformation in Africa.

Following the various activities of the programme and complemented by expert interviews and desktop research, the memorandum aims to achieve several objectives:

  • Summarise arguments for a participatory, sustainable and fair ecological transformation
  • from the activities of the programme, develop policy recommendations for the implementation of socio-environmental transformation processes for Morocco and Africa Develop
  • elements for a new vision for socio-environmental transformations in Africa.

The memorandum is to be presented and discussed at a workshop in October 2020.
